I can’t believe this is my 8th year homeschooling! It has been an adventure of learning what works and what doesn’t. Just when you think you have it figured out, the next kid comes along and they are completely different so you are back to square one. I’ll share what we are going to be trying this year for each of our kids. Please remember that every child and family is different as well as every state’s law and regulations. I’ll share what we are using this year for our seventh grader but it might not work for your family. I’ve tried tons of curriculum over the years until I have found what I love and what works for us.

For the first few years I switched math curriculums every year. I just was never completely happy with the choices and then there would be gaps in our learning because the scope and sequence of each would be slightly different. I have finally settled on Christian Light Education. We used this last year in 6th grade and decided to keep it for 7th as well. I think they have really good explanations at the beginning of each lesson that teaches them a new concept. I also like that it is a “spiral method”. It introduces new concepts but constantly reviews what has been learned and provides ongoing practice to reinforce and make sure they understand. It comes with quizzes, tests, and speed drills for mastery. I like that it is very open and go and and affordable!

7th Grade Science Curriculum

We have used and loved Apologia Science for the last few years. When you school multiple children like I do, it helps to have a curriculum you can do together as a family. This year for 7th grade we are moving into their middle school curriculum. We will be using General Science this year. It will be a nice transition from their elementary science to the high school science. It’s written in conversational style. They include plenty of experiments to aid in learning. They also have workbooks that give room for note taking as well as things like vocabulary practice. I also found the company Nature’s Workshop Plus that sells kits for the Apologia curriculum that comes with all of the things you need for the experiments. A lot of what you need is normal household things or things you can get easily, but I know myself and if I have to take the time to remember and get things we won’t end up doing the experiments. This way it’s all here for me and easy to access.

We have been using Notgrass History for the last couple years. This is another one that I really enjoy being able to use with multiple grades. This year we will be using America The Beautiful. This also comes with a book called We the People with original newspaper articles, journal entries, songs, speeches, and more. They also have a Timeline book and Map book so you have some geography as well as history. They also have a literature add on that includes 10 titles that focuses on a particular period of U.S. History. They have a lesson review book and a workbook. I love how thorough it is and they also includes some activities at the end of the lessons whether that is copy work, Bible reading, vocabulary, or a family activity.

Writing

We are trying Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) this year for writing. We have not tried it before so I can’t recommend it yet, but I have heard really good things about it. It is definitely more pricey, but writing is not my 7th graders favorite subject and one he struggles with more than others so I thought it would be worth the investment if it helps.

Grammar

It was recommended to use Fix It Grammar (I hear it goes well with IEW) so we are going to try that this year. This is a new curriculum for us. I have tried quite a few grammar curriculums and haven’t found one yet that we absolutely love.

Reading

At this point our focus in reading is just reading various books and genres. We will talk about plot, reading comprehension, and character analysis. I may order some literature guides on Teachers Pay Teachers but my focus is just to expose him to different styles and types of writing and continue to develop a love of reading.

    Spelling

We are continuing to use All About Spelling this year. Spelling is another subject that isn’t his favorite and he struggles with so we have really like this curriculum to explain the why behind the spelling of words and not just a list they have to memorize.

    7th Grade Bible Curriculum

We are using Not Consumed Bible studies this year as a family. We will start with Keep Thy Heart and work through it together. Each kid will have their own study book.
