Tolls are annoying. Trust me, we’ve gone through more than enough toll booths in our travels. Thankfully many toll roads offer contactless payments through a toll transponder you put in your vehicle or they’ll take a picture of your license plate and send you a bill.

But the fees on the “pay by plate” options are generally higher (double in some cases) than the transponder fees. But you don’t want to get a different transponder for each state you visit. That’s where SunPass comes in.

SunPass - One Transponder to Replace Them All

The SunPass is the Florida prepaid toll program. You get a toll transponder for your vehicle and then pay your toll fees online.

The beauty of the SunPass is that it also works in a large number of states on the eastern half of the United States. So this means that you pay the discounted rate in these states (rather than the higher “pay by plate” fee). In some states the transponder fee is nearly half the price of the “pay by plate” fees.

SunPass Mini vs SunPass Pro

If you only plan to travel within Florida and a few other states a SunPass Mini will be fine. But if you want to travel further, the SunPass Pro is they way to go since it is compatible with multiple different toll systems.

At the time of writing the cost for a Pro is only $10 higher ($4.99 for a Mini and $14.99 for a Pro). So at that price difference you might as well get the Pro version. Our SunPass Pro has more than paid for itself by getting us the discounted rates on tolls.
